Sun Exposure Can Benefit Seniors

Seniors lifestyle general don’t include as much outdoor activities as younger people, and older individuals are experiencing vitamin D deficiency at a much higher rate. While vitamin D can be gained from our diets, from food such as spinach, kale, tuna, soybeans, and others, sun remains as one of the main sources for vitamin D.

According to studies, low vitamin D levels can lead to metabolic syndrome, which includes obesity, high blood sugar, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure, 4 main factors that affect our heart health and other diseases such as diabetes.  Furthermore, vitamin D is important for bone health as well because it helps your body absorb calcium and help lower risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures.

However, it is to note that seniors must be cautious about sun exposure, especially during this summer heat.  Make sure to avoid the peak sun hours when the ultraviolet rays is strongest, and be sure to wear sun protection for your skin and your eyes whenever you are outdoor!

Tips to Avoid Falls and Bone Fractures for Seniors

Contrary to popular beliefs, exercise is actually beneficial for people with osteoporosis because it improve strength, flexibility and balance to help prevent against falls.  Another way to keep seniors alert is by talking to your doctor about medications that causes drowsiness and see if there are alternative options that do not have such side effects. How to Begin Conservatorship

Some people may not know how to go about being a conservator. In order for someone to become a conservator for an incapacitated individual, one must propose to the court to be appointed as the conservator, this proposal is also known as the petition for conservatorship. This petition can be filed by more than just family members.  Whether it is a close friend, a public official, a nonprofit agency, or a professional conservator can file the petition.  Since it is required for the conservator to be bonded to ensure they can execute duties faithfully, an attorney is usually a must in order to obtain such a bond.  In addition, the petitioner needs to proof that the conservatee is unable to provide basic personal needs in the case for conservatorship of the person, or unable to manage their own financial assets or resist fraud in the case for conservatorship of the estate.  Lastly, the petition must have a list of all possible unsuitable/unavailable alternatives to the conservatorship and the reason for each.  We understand it is a overwhelming process, and it is good to be prepared before beginning the petition phase.

It may be difficult to act as the family caregiver with all the stress and anxiety resulted from the conservatorship process, and A-1 Home Care in Sierra Madre  is the perfect solution to all your loved one’s in home care needs.  We are able to meet much of the needs for a conservator of the person, including meal preparation, incontinence care, housecleaning, transportation, medication administration, and other areas.  For over 20 years, our staff of caregivers here at A-1 Home Care have been hard at work, dedicating their skills and compassionate to improve the quality of life in many seniors and elderly.  Each are experts in Parkinson Care, Alzheimer’s Care,  Diabetic Care, Arthritis Care, After Surgery Care, Hospice Care, Bipolar Care, Cancer Care, Respite Care, and more.  We guarantee to fit the schedule with 24 hour live in or hourly care options, and you can find us anywhere in Los Angeles County, with operations in Sierra Madre, La Canada, Altadena, Pasadena, San Marino, Arcadia, Temple City, Rosemead, and other cities.

Sierra Madre Arthritis Care: Opioid Receptors, the Brain’s Natural Painkillers

Given the highly addictive nature of opiate drugs prescribed for seniors with arthritis, it would make sense if researchers found a way to increase the brain’s ability to produce opioid receptors, the body’s natural painkillers.  A group of scientists at the University of Manchester have found that the brain’s response to severe arthritic pain is to increase the amount of these receptors to the affected areas, but it’s still not enough to palpably reduce the chronic pain.  Using receptor imaging to develop a method to reduce pain without drugs, the team of researchers is working hard in Manchester to discover groundbreaking news for seniors with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and other forms of arthritis.  Managing day-to-day life activities is extremely hard for the elderly, but thanks to A-1 Home Care, seniors in Sierra Madre and surrounding cities can enjoy round-the-clock arthritis relief with caregiver assistance.

24-Hour Arthritis Home Care Assistance

Chronic pain resulting from arthritis can severely limit your elderly loved one’s ability to cook, clean, drive, write, bathe and dress oneself.  Having a certified nurse aide dramatically reduces the negative impact of arthritis on activities of daily living.  A highly skilled caregiver will help your loved one perform household chores and manage chronic pain by applying home remedies as well as administering prescribed medication.  The presence of a seasoned caregiver also prevents your loved one from falling, as arthritis sufferers and stroke survivors are at very high risk for accidental falls.  Whether you need 24-hour live-in care or part-time respite care during the week, A-1 Home Care in Sierra Madre will revolve around your scheduling needs.

Seniors with Giant Cell Arteritis at Risk for Stroke

Are you at risk for Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA)? A common blood vessel condition among seniors, GCA leads to sudden blindness or stroke. Each year, about 29 out of 100,000 individuals are diagnosed with this condition in which the blood vessels become inflamed; it produces symptoms such as throbbing headaches in the temples, double vision or loss of vision, fever and unintentional weight loss. Research studies show a link between GCA and the herpes virus that causes shingles and chicken pox. The exact cause of GCA remains unknown, but in Sierra Madre and other parts of Los Angeles County, A-1 Home Care’s elder care solutions will reduce your loved one’s chances of developing Giant Cell Arteritis.

As with any physical ailment regardless of the cause, maintaining a good diet, a regular exercise routine, and a well-balanced schedule of social activities is essential to one’s overall health. Muscular Dystrophy vs. Multiple Sclerosis

By definition, Muscular Dystrophy (MD) is a group of non-inflammatory disorders, each with its own set of symptoms, causes and types. Oftentimes, people confuse MD with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), but MS is an inflammatory disorder which affects the central nervous system whereas MD is non-inflammatory and only affects the muscles. Muscular Dystrophy is inherited while Multiple Sclerosis is caused by the body’s attack on its own immune system. People with MD have an abnormal gait, muscle weakness, delayed development or learning disability, constipation, scoliosis or heart muscle disease. A-1 Home Care in Sierra Madre maximizes function and autonomy for children and young adults, thereby enhancing the quality of their daily lives.

Signs of Muscular Dystrophy are usually not apparent until a child reaches the stage when he starts to walk. You may notice some delay in the child’s motor skills and cognitive development, which stems from muscle weakness. After the onset of MD, if the child grows up and receives the maximum care available through technological advances and molecular biology, he may live to be 30, but at this time, there is no known cure for Muscular Dystrophy. A-1 Home Care in Sierra Madre addresses the non-medical aspects of 24-hour in-home care, such as assistance with meal preparation, transportation to school, and assistance with psychosocial development. We have live-in certified home health aides who are knowledgeable in neuromuscular disorders and can assist in answering your questions about your loved one’s health.

A-1 Home Care is Los Angeles County’s first choice in home care for seniors, children and adults of all ages. In-Home Care for Breast Cancer

So you’re at the age when you start to wonder about your health.  If you’ve been one of the few lucky ones who have enjoyed good health all their lives, you might be reluctant to go to the doctor’s for a check-up.  People fear going to the doctor’s because they want to put off hearing “bad news” (if there are any) as long as possible.  If they don’t feel pain or extreme discomfort, then they’re good.  Women, especially, are reluctant if they are within the low income bracket because they don’t want to take time off from work and arrange for child care, miss income (if they don’t get paid time off), and wait long hours at the doctor’s office for a five-minute examination.  However, getting a check-up is well worth the trouble, because it will prevent unnecessary premature death and improve the quality of your life.  According to the American Cancer Society, over 3.1 million women in the United States were reported to have breast cancer, for which the risks increase with age.  The best age to start screening is age 40, and A-1 Home Care in Sierra Madre delineates some of the risks for breast cancer below:

  • Family history
  • Age
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Gender
  • Childbirth after age 35
  • Onset of menstruation before age 12
  • Menopause after age 55
  • Never being pregnant
  • Never carried a pregnancy to full term

After-Surgery Care for Breast Cancer Patients

Depending on the stage of breast cancer, women usually receive chemotherapy, radiation and hormone therapy for cancer treatment.  Surgery is the most common treatment.  A-1 Home Care offers high quality after-surgery care for women, men and seniors for long-term or short-term care.  Post-surgery care includes assistance with cooking, cleaning, chores, drop-off and pick-up, prescription pick-ups, grocery shopping, companion care and more.  For 25 years, A-1 Home Care has provided superior 24-hour in-home care services with compassion, integrity, and dignity.  We ensure 100% customer satisfaction with all our clients.

For quality cancer care and after-surgery care, call A-1 Home Care today (626) 219-6440 or (562) 929-8400 or visit  for services in Sierra Madre, Pasadena, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Malibu, Hollywood and other cities in LA County.

On February 11, 2016, A-1 Home Care held a Booth Display event at Los Alamitos Recreation/Senior Center, Los Alamitos, Ca. Marisol Trejo was there with the brochures, postcards, business cards, lunch coolers and bottled water. I set up one table in the lounge room across from the auditorium where the seniors were having their event. Twenty+ seniors, men and women, walked over to the lounge room for information, postcards, lunch coolers and water bottles.

The seniors loved our presence and giveaways. Terri, the senior representative allowed me several minutes on the microphone to introduce myself and A-1. Very friendly event, lots of questions and answering. Many seniors mentioned knowing someone, friend, family member, or neighbor they know may be interested and they would pass on our information to them.
