How to Care for Your Elderly Loved One without Going Mad
You love your mom dearly. But after her stroke, she’s been calling you non-stop, multiple times a day, because her mind has gone delirious and she’s not making any sense at all. For example, you got her a 24-hour caregiver to tend to her every need while you’re at work, but somehow that’s still not enough. She wants you to cancel the caregiver for one reason or another. Delirium after an acute stroke is very common among the elderly. A stark change in mental status, especially with regard to concentration and attention, signals confusion and should be documented for your loved one’s doctor. Whatever you do, do not cancel the caregiver but take the following steps to guard your own sanity:
- Set boundaries – turn off your phone for blocks of time so you can have some peace
- Don’t try to reason with someone who won’t listen
- Find a community group in your area where you can vent (not just an online community group but an actual group that meets near you)
- Find opportunities to socialize with your friends as much as possible
- Strive to maintain normalcy in your own life
- Have the live-in caregiver document symptoms so that your elderly one can receive proper treatment after a stroke
If your mom’s delirium is driving you crazy, it’s best to rely on professional 24-hour care so you can have both of your needs met. A-1 Home Care’sprofessionals are experts at assuaging seniors who seem “needy” or irrational. Our First Aid/CPR-certified caregivers have years of experience helping seniors and their families; we treat your loved ones as though they’re our own.

Sharing The Holiday Joy With Seniors
The staff and management here at A-1 Home Care cares about the communities that we do our business in. Since sharing is caring, we have decided to share the holiday spirits with seniors at the Two Palms Convalescent Hospital in Pasadena back on Monday, December 9th. It was a beautiful day outside, and we appreciated all the warm welcome from the senior participants.
To start it off, we set up a wonderful presentation on the mean of Christmas, then went on to watch classic Christmas movie scenes to bring back some nostalgia. After some Christmas music, the participants seem to be warming up to the holiday spirits. It was then time for the main event of the afternoon, which was a holiday arts and crafts where the the seniors would personalized their own ornaments to hang onto a Christmas tree at the Hospital. Everyone was very creative with their designs, inspiring our staff members to join in and create their own as well! At the end of the day, we all shared a smile on our faces, and that’s exactly what we had hoped for by setting up this event!
A-1 Home care in Pasadena would like to Thank the activity director Lerma for allowing us to share the holiday cheers with their senior residents, and we hope to come back another time!

Common Surgeries Among Seniors
Surgeries are scary, even the minor ones. However, with medical advances in the 21st century, surgical prowess are advancing the ability for humans to overcome illness like never before.
Aging lead seniors to be more prone to illness because of their advanced age. Whether it is their immune system weakening, or that it is the naturally aging process that is causing issues physically, there are common surgeries that elderly people tend to need.
Common Surgery No. 1: Cataract Surgery
The clouding of the clear lens of your eye, that’s cataract in its simplest term according to the Mayo Clinic. It is essentially seeing things through a fogged up window. Imagine if you have to constantly live under such symptoms, it can make life very difficult, inconvenient, and even dangerous.
One of the main causes of cataract is aging. Ultraviolet B rays may be a contributing factor to cataract, therefore cataracts tend to happen more among seniors. but there are also risk factors such as Diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, or even previous eye injuries or surgeries that can lead to increased risk of cataract.
Common among seniors, if cataract is affecting their quality of life, a cataract surgery is usually recommended by eye doctors. Although it may sound intimidating, cataract surgery does not require hospital stay, and is considered one of the safer surgeries. Certainly, with any surgery, it will come with some risks.
Common Surgery No. 2: Hip Replacement Surgery
As the leading cause of injuries for older adults, falls are a serious threat to seniors living at home alone even if they are healthy. According to the CDC, 25% of adults over 65 fall each year.
Slipping on a wet spot in the kitchen, slipping in the shower, or other causes, falls often lead to fracturing of the hips, and that can cause serious issues for the senior. As a result, hip repair is also one of the more common surgeries performed on seniors.
After a hip replacement surgery, it may take a while before the senior is strong enough to regain their mobility. If family members have a full time career, it maybe be difficult to find time and help their loved ones. Hiring an 24 hour live in caregiver can often be a wonderful option to help the seniors the moment they need help in the comfort of their own home while recovering from the surgery. They may need help getting water, getting up from bed, using the bathroom, and more for a period of time, so improving their quality can also help improve their morale.
Common Surgery No. 3: Knee Replacement Surgery
The human knees take a lot of beating over a lifetime, sometimes, it may not be able to withstand the entire lifespan of the person, especially if the person has been very active in their younger days.
Severe pain can be caused by osteoarthritis, and such pain can prevent seniors from walking. With the loss of mobility, seniors often choose to opt for knee replacement surgeries to ease their pain and regain their normal functions. Timeline of recover varies, but it often ranges from weeks to months. Like hip surgery, having an home health assistance from an experience home care professional can make recovery a much smoother process.

How To Prevent Colorectal Cancer
Diet and exercise is always one of the top priorities when it comes to disease prevention, and it is not different for colorectal cancer. The National Cancer Institute recommends a low-fat, high-fiber diet toward colorectal cancer prevention. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables throughout the day, and limit meat, eggs, and dairy product consumption because they are a main source for fat for most people. Meanwhile, you can find your source of fiber in your vegetables and other whole grain products. You also need to do enough exercise in order for it to be effective. Aim for 30 minutes a day, for 5 days out of the week for a standard, healthy exercise routine.
There are also studies that suggest taking aspirin can help reduce size of precancerous polyps in the colon, thus reducing the risk of colon cancer. Along with other benefits of aspirin, you might definitely want to consider taking an aspirin a day. However, before beginning your regimen, you need to consult your doctor first.
Finally, screening and early detection is extremely important when it comes to preventing colorectal cancer because it is one of the more treatable forms of cancer. Detecting precancerous polyps can essentially prevent the cancer from developing by removing the colon polyps.

Sierra Madre In-Home Care: Muscular Dystrophy vs. Multiple Sclerosis
By definition, Muscular Dystrophy (MD) is a group of non-inflammatory disorders, each with its own set of symptoms, causes and types. Oftentimes, people confuse MD with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), but MS is an inflammatory disorder which affects the central nervous system whereas MD is non-inflammatory and only affects the muscles. Muscular Dystrophy is inherited while Multiple Sclerosis is caused by the body’s attack on its own immune system. People with MD have an abnormal gait, muscle weakness, delayed development or learning disability, constipation, scoliosis or heart muscle disease. A-1 Home Care in Sierra Madre maximizes function and autonomy for children and young adults, thereby enhancing the quality of their daily lives.
Signs of Muscular Dystrophy are usually not apparent until a child reaches the stage when he starts to walk. You may notice some delay in the child’s motor skills and cognitive development, which stems from muscle weakness. After the onset of MD, if the child grows up and receives the maximum care available through technological advances and molecular biology, he may live to be 30, but at this time, there is no known cure for Muscular Dystrophy. A-1 Home Care in Sierra Madre addresses the non-medical aspects of 24-hour in-home care, such as assistance with meal preparation, transportation to school, and assistance with psychosocial development. We have live-in certified home health aides who are knowledgeable in neuromuscular disorders and can assist in answering your questions about your loved one’s health.
